On September 30, 2026, TikTok launched a major upgrade to Smart+, its AI-powered campaign automation suite. For ecommerce brands running Smart+ campaigns, this means 3 new automation tiers (full, partial, and manual control) that let you decide exactly which modules AI manages, plus creative-level reporting broken down by individual creative material ID across video, image, catalog, and text assets, and expanded campaign capacity of 30 unique asset groups per ad group.
The Smart+ upgrade replaces all-or-nothing AI automation with module-by-module control across four independent dimensions: audience targeting, budget allocation, placements, and creative. TikTok has merged the manual and Smart+ campaign creation flows into a single unified interface, so the old separation between automated and manual campaign types no longer exists. For ecommerce brands, this means you can now let AI optimize budget and placements while keeping manual control over creative, a combination that was previously impossible inside Smart+.
TikTok has been moving toward greater automation throughout 2026, but the all-or-nothing Smart+ model created friction for 7-9 figure ecommerce brands that wanted AI optimization without surrendering creative control. The module-by-module approach responds directly to advertiser feedback and mirrors how Meta's Advantage+ has evolved, where manual and automated controls now co-exist in a single workflow. With Q4 ad costs rising across every platform, giving brands more precision over where AI applies is a meaningful differentiator for advertisers deciding where to concentrate BFCM spend.
The upgrade also introduces paid and organic traffic signal integration into Smart+, meaning the system now incorporates performance data from your brand's organic TikTok content alongside paid campaign signals when optimizing for conversions. Brands with a strong organic TikTok presence gain a compounding optimization advantage when running Smart+ campaigns that was not available before this update.
The three automation tiers apply independently to each of the four campaign modules: audience targeting, budget allocation, placements, and creative. Here is what each tier means in practice:
Creative-level reporting is now available within Smart+ campaigns, showing performance by individual creative material ID. This means you can see which specific videos, images, catalog formats, and text assets are driving conversions directly in Ads Manager, without needing to export to third-party dashboards. Combined with the new 30-asset-group capacity per ad group, Smart+ now supports large-scale creative testing inside a single campaign structure ahead of Black Friday.
TikTok Symphony, its generative AI creative suite, is now built directly into the Smart+ campaign builder. Advertisers can generate AI-powered video variants, apply automated caption creation, and activate creative optimization without switching between tools. Assets created through Dreamina or Symphony Scripting feed directly into Smart+ campaigns with automated performance weighting applied by the system.
TikTok has also added automated CTA creation with pre-filled details for each asset group, reducing manual setup time for creative variants. For 8-9 figure brands running large-scale creative testing before BFCM, this integration compresses what was previously a multi-step process across separate tools into a single workflow inside the campaign builder.

TikTok is migrating existing Smart+ campaigns to the new unified interface. Review your active campaigns in Ads Manager to confirm automation tier settings for each module, as defaults may have changed during migration. Pay particular attention to the creative module setting if your brand has specific creative control requirements, as the default may have moved to full automation.
Full automation gives TikTok AI complete control over a module with no manual override. Partial automation lets you set constraints and guardrails, such as maximum CPM caps or audience exclusion lists, while AI optimizes within those parameters. For most ecommerce brands, partial automation on targeting and full automation on budget and placements is a reasonable starting configuration for BFCM campaigns.
Smart+ is available globally to all TikTok Ads accounts. The new module automation controls and creative-level reporting are rolling out through the updated Ads Manager interface. If you do not see the new module control options in your account, clear your Ads Manager cache or contact your TikTok account representative to request access.
Smart+ now incorporates performance signals from your brand's organic TikTok content alongside paid campaign data when optimizing conversion delivery. Brands with a strong organic TikTok presence gain an additional optimization signal that was not previously available in Smart+ campaigns. The integration is automatic and does not require additional configuration, but you need an active TikTok Business Account linked to your Ads Manager to benefit from organic signal incorporation.
