On October 1, 2026, Shopify launched Canvas, a generative-AI-powered visual design workspace that lets any merchant build a fully custom online store in approximately 20 minutes, compared to the developer sprints that custom storefronts previously required. For 7, 8, and 9-figure ecommerce brands heading into Q4, the ability to redesign high-traffic landing pages without a development queue changes the economics of your busiest sales window.
Canvas eliminates the bottleneck between your brand's design vision and what actually lives on your storefront. Merchants now direct Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, through a chat interface and watch changes render across every page simultaneously. For brands running paid traffic into conversion pages this holiday season, getting your storefront right before November is no longer a developer scheduling problem.
Canvas is accessible under Online Store, then Themes in your Shopify admin. Every page of your store is laid out in a single infinite workspace. You can pan across the full store, zoom into any section, click any element to edit directly, or describe what you want to Sidekick in chat.
Sidekick in Canvas does more than generate content. It navigates all the templates and files that make up your theme, makes coordinated changes across them, validates its own code, and takes screenshots to inspect how changes land before confirming them. The merchant and Sidekick look at the same live render, which tightens feedback loops considerably. Ben Sehl, Director of Product at Shopify and co-founder of Kotn, noted that building a rough store previously took him two weeks as a developer. Canvas brings that to roughly twenty minutes.
At launch, Canvas supports Shopify themes and custom themes. Your original theme remains untouched in the standard editor. You create or duplicate into Canvas, which acts as a separate environment. This makes testing safe: your production store is not affected until you choose to publish.

At launch, Canvas does not support third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks and app embeds. Themes edited in Canvas do not automatically receive theme updates. Brands running complex app stacks or third-party themes will want to monitor the Shopify Changelog for expanded compatibility before committing to a Canvas migration.
Paid media performance is directly tied to the quality of the pages it drives traffic into. An updated, conversion-optimized storefront heading into November captures more revenue from the same ad spend. Previously, making significant storefront changes before Q4 meant locking in a developer, running a design sprint, and QA testing in a compressed window. Canvas compresses that into a single async workflow with Sidekick.
Canvas is also Shopify's clearest signal yet that it is building toward what it calls agentic commerce: an ecosystem where AI handles not just content generation but actual code deployment and design iteration. For brands that have avoided heavy customization because of developer cost, that threshold just dropped significantly.

Canvas is a new AI-powered visual design workspace inside Shopify where merchants and Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, build and customize online stores together. Every page of your store is visible in one infinite workspace, and Sidekick makes real-time changes based on chat instructions.
Not at launch. Canvas currently supports Shopify themes and custom themes only. Third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store, along with Markets, rollouts, translations, and app blocks, are not yet supported. Shopify has indicated these capabilities will be added over time.
For many storefront customization tasks, yes. Canvas with Sidekick can make coordinated changes across theme templates, validate its own code, and render results in real time. Highly custom development work, deep app integrations, and complex backend logic still require developer involvement.
Canvas began rolling out to existing stores on October 1, 2026. Shopify is releasing it over the coming days across its merchant base. To check availability, go to Online Store, then Themes in your Shopify admin and look for the Canvas option when creating or duplicating a theme.
