On September 17, 2026, Pinterest announced Visual Search Ads at its annual Pinterest Presents event. For ecommerce brands running catalog campaigns, this means ads now appear directly inside Pinterest's visual search results and Pin close-ups, placing your products in front of more than 80 billion searches Pinterest facilitates every month, more than half of which carry direct commercial intent.
Visual Search Ads put your products exactly where shoppers are actively searching, inside Pinterest search results where more than 96% of queries are unbranded. This is a new lower-funnel placement that did not exist last month. Getting into the beta now means your catalog appears in a placement your competitors are not yet running.
When a Pinterest user taps a Pin to view a close-up, or uses Pinterest's visual search to find related images, Visual Search Ads appear directly within those results. The placement is contextually matched to the visual query, so a shopper searching for "navy linen blazer" sees your product in the search grid alongside organic pins. The ads run through Performance+, Pinterest's AI-powered campaign suite, and support lower-funnel objectives including conversion and catalog sales. A new Priority Products feature inside Performance+ lets advertisers designate specific SKUs to appear first during seasonal launches or promotional windows, giving brands more control than the standard algorithmic prioritization.
Pinterest also rolled out self-serve A/B testing inside Performance+ alongside Visual Search Ads. This allows advertisers to test which product images and creative formats perform best in visual search results without needing a Pinterest account manager to run tests manually. For brands that want to iterate quickly before the holiday season, this is a meaningful upgrade from how Pinterest testing worked last year.
Pinterest reaches 522 million monthly active users, but the search behavior is what separates it from other social platforms. Unlike Instagram or TikTok, Pinterest users search with purchase intent at a higher rate than they browse passively. More than 80 billion searches happen monthly, and because those searches are predominantly visual rather than text-based, matching happens on images, not keywords. That distinction matters: you do not need to win a branded keyword auction. You need the right product in front of the right visual query.
"More than 96% of Pinterest searches are unbranded. Your brand does not have to win on name recognition. It wins on having the right product in front of the right visual query at the right moment."
For context on how significant this channel has become: Pinterest's Q2 2026 results showed continued growth in shopping engagement, with users increasingly coming to the platform specifically to find products to buy. The platform has shifted from a "save for later" behavior to active in-session shopping discovery, which is exactly what makes Visual Search Ads viable as a conversion-oriented placement rather than just a brand awareness play.
Standard Pinterest ads run in the home feed and Today tab, interrupting browsing behavior. Visual Search Ads run in search results and Pin close-ups, meaning the shopper has already expressed an intent signal before your ad appears. This mirrors the difference between display and paid search: one interrupts, the other intercepts. For ecommerce brands with strong catalog feeds and visual creative assets, this functions closer to demand capture than demand generation.
"Visual Search Ads intercept shoppers who have already taken a deliberate discovery action. That is a fundamentally different buying signal from a passive home feed scroll."
The competitive landscape for this placement is still thin. Most ecommerce brands have not yet activated for beta access, and early entrants will accumulate performance data and algorithm learning before the general release opens the channel to everyone. This is the same dynamic that rewarded early Performance Max adopters on Google: the brands that move first gain a structural advantage in the platform's optimization model.
