On July 29, 2026, Google published its July Demand Gen Drop, rolling out Checkout Links to nine new international markets and upgrading Target ROAS bidding for Demand Gen campaigns worldwide. For ecommerce brands running Demand Gen, this means a proven 6% average lift in conversions is now accessible across Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, France, Poland, Israel, and Argentina, and the new tROAS upgrade means campaigns hit their ROAS targets faster with less wasted spend in the ramp-up phase.
Checkout Links send shoppers directly from a YouTube ad to your cart or checkout page, eliminating the navigation friction that kills conversions between inspiration and purchase. Combined with an upgraded Target ROAS bidding system that no longer holds back spend during the learning phase, this update repositions Demand Gen as Google's primary lower-funnel video tool heading into Q4. Brands that configure these features now will have months of machine learning data ahead of competitors who wait until October.
Checkout Links allow advertisers to connect Demand Gen campaigns directly to a specific cart or checkout page, bypassing the homepage entirely. Instead of a shopper clicking a YouTube ad and then navigating to find your product, they land directly at the point of purchase with the featured item ready to buy.
Google's own data makes the case clearly: 94% of holiday shoppers who used YouTube took further steps toward a purchase after watching a related video. The gap between that inspiration and the completed transaction has always been the challenge. Checkout Links close that gap at exactly the moment intent is highest.
The 6% average conversion lift comes from eliminating the navigation steps that cause drop-off between the ad click and the sale. For a brand running $50,000 per month in Demand Gen spend, that improvement in conversion rate compounds directly into a lower cost per acquisition without any increase in budget.
To use Checkout Links, specify a direct cart or checkout URL in your Demand Gen campaign settings. Google recommends linking to pages optimized for mobile, loading in under three seconds, with the specific product from your ad already in the cart. One of the most common frustrations with automated bidding is the learning phase. When a campaign launches, Google's system defaults to conservative spending while it gathers conversion data. For brands with tight ROAS targets, this produces weeks of apparent underperformance that erodes confidence in the campaign before it ever has a chance to work.
The upgraded tROAS bidding for Demand Gen addresses this directly. The update prevents the system from being overly cautious early on, allowing campaigns to pace more aggressively toward your targets from day one rather than gradually ramping up over two to four weeks.
The practical implication: if you have held back Demand Gen spend because early-phase performance looked weak, the upgraded tROAS bidding may resolve that pattern. Campaigns that previously underperformed in their ramp phase are worth re-testing. Pair this with the Prophit Engine to ensure your ROAS targets reflect true blended profitability rather than platform-reported ROAS alone.
The July Demand Gen Drop also reinforces three additional tools that directly affect holiday performance for 7 and 8-figure ecommerce brands:
Product feeds: Adding a product feed to your Demand Gen campaign allows Google to combine your video and image creative with specific product cards, prices, and ratings. This creates a richer ad unit and gives Google's AI more signals to match ads to high-intent shoppers at the right moment in the purchase journey.
Affiliate partnerships boost: If you work with YouTube creators, the Affiliate Partnerships Boost feature allows you to amplify creator content within your Demand Gen campaigns. Creator-led video consistently drives stronger purchase consideration than brand-produced content, especially for new customer acquisition heading into a competitive holiday season.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): Available in the US, UCP enables direct purchase completion from within a YouTube ad. Shoppers do not leave YouTube to complete the transaction. This is available to select retailers and expanding through 2026.
Taken together, these tools move Demand Gen from a pure awareness channel into a full-funnel vehicle capable of driving direct sales at scale. Google published a new 2026 Demand Gen Retail guide alongside this drop with specific setup instructions for each feature.

Checkout Links are now available in Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, France, Poland, Israel, and Argentina, in addition to the US and UK where they previously launched. Google expects to continue expanding availability through late 2026.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) enables purchases to be completed directly within a YouTube ad without leaving the platform. It is currently available in the US only and requires retailer eligibility. If you work with a Google Ads agency or have a dedicated Google account team, you can request eligibility review through your account manager.
The upgrade prevents Google's system from holding back spend during the early phase of a new campaign. Campaigns reach their optimization targets faster and with less waste in the first two weeks. You should still expect some variability in the first 7 to 10 days, but the extreme conservatism of traditional tROAS in the learning phase is significantly reduced.
Demand Gen is purpose-built for video and visual discovery across YouTube, Gmail, and Discover. Performance Max spans search, shopping, display, and video together. For brands with strong video creative and a Q4 new customer acquisition goal, Demand Gen with Checkout Links is now a compelling standalone strategy. Many 7 and 8-figure brands run both in parallel, using Demand Gen for top-of-funnel video discovery and Performance Max to capture intent across search and shopping.
