On October 9, 2026, Google Ads introduced a new “Overlay on videos” asset optimization setting for Demand Gen campaigns, and it is turned on by default for every active campaign. For ecommerce brands running Demand Gen, this means Google is now automatically layering AI-generated text from your existing copy on top of your video creative across YouTube, Discover, and Gmail, and with 85% of viewers watching videos without sound, those overlays are appearing on impressions right now.
Google’s system pulls from your existing text assets, the headline and description copy already attached to your Demand Gen campaign, and places them as overlays directly on your video ads during delivery. Any Demand Gen campaign that was live on October 9 has this feature active unless you have manually navigated to your asset optimization settings and disabled it. The setting is labeled “new” inside the interface and sits in the Video section of asset optimization alongside the existing “Shorter videos” and “Resized videos” options.
Google’s AI selects which text assets to display, determines their placement on the video frame, and decides when overlays appear versus when a clean video version runs. There is no preview before overlays go live, no approval step, and no notification that the setting activated. The system is designed to reinforce key messages for viewers who are watching without audio, a behavior that accounts for a substantial share of video consumption across Google’s Discover and Gmail placements. Campaigns serving audiences in the European Union, India, or New York state will also see an “edited with AI” label applied automatically on every impression where the overlay runs, in compliance with Google’s disclosure policy for AI-modified creative.
Demand Gen campaigns are typically where ecommerce brands invest in high-production video creative designed to create a specific brand impression during the discovery phase. Those videos often include on-screen text, branded typography, timed calls to action, and carefully designed product shots. An AI-generated text overlay placed by Google can cover key product visuals, duplicate existing on-screen copy, or introduce headline phrasing that does not match the brand voice in the video itself.
The default-ON behavior means this activated without requiring any advertiser action or awareness. Every campaign running on October 9 was enrolled automatically. Ecommerce brands that run creative tests across multiple Demand Gen video assets will also find it harder to attribute performance differences cleanly, because two video variants may now be delivering with different AI-generated overlay text, adding a variable the test was not designed to measure.
This follows a pattern Google has applied to several features in 2026. The AI-generated Shopping ad descriptions in July 2026, the PMax AI video resizing in September 2026, and Demand Gen overlays in October 2026 all launched as default-ON settings that required advertisers to actively opt out. Tracking this pattern is part of managing your Google Ads account heading into BFCM. For the full list of Google Ads changes this year, see our full Google Ads 2026 update tracker.

Yes. Google enabled the setting by default on all active Demand Gen campaigns as of October 9, 2026. Any campaign that was running on that date has overlays active unless you have manually turned the setting off in the asset optimization section.
No. Google does not currently offer a preview of how overlays will appear on specific video assets before they go live on impressions. Your first visibility into the output is from served ads. If you want to avoid creative surprises heading into Q4, disabling the feature is the safest approach.
No. Google explicitly states that ads modified by its own asset optimization features will not violate its policies against text overlays and watermarks. The “edited with AI” label requirement in the EU, India, and New York state is a disclosure rule that applies automatically when the overlay runs, not a policy violation.
That depends on your creative setup. “Shorter videos” and “Resized videos” are separate settings with different purposes: trimming for attention span and fitting vertical placements respectively. “Overlay on videos” is the new addition. You can disable it individually without touching the other two, or use “Disable all” to turn off every video optimization in one action if full creative control is your priority.
Your Demand Gen campaigns are running with new AI behavior that was not there last week. The faster you review your asset optimization settings, the faster you can decide whether that change fits your brand heading into Q4.
