On August 24, 2026, OpenAI announced conversion-optimized cost-per-click (oCPC) bidding for ChatGPT Ads product feed campaigns, alongside a new carousel ad format, expanded measurement partnerships with Triple Whale, Sonar Optimize, and Hightouch, and an expansion to 31 European countries. For ecommerce brands running Google Shopping campaigns, this means a viable performance channel now exists inside ChatGPT conversations that uses the same structured product catalog format you already manage, with starting CPMs observed as low as $25.
oCPC lets you optimize for conversions while still paying per click. The system favors clicks statistically more likely to convert based on ChatGPT's understanding of user intent within a conversation, rather than keywords or interests. For brands already running Google Shopping, the same structured product feed file you send Google can power your ChatGPT campaigns directly.
Product feed campaigns connect your existing product catalog to ChatGPT's ad system. You set filters for eligible products and the platform automatically generates sponsored ads using product names, images, prices, and attributes from the feed. The platform supports up to one million SKUs per advertiser. Ads appear below ChatGPT responses, clearly labeled as sponsored, and are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and ChatGPT Go plans, and now to logged-out users as well. The new carousel format lets multiple products from your catalog appear in a single placement, and OpenAI expanded the channel to 31 European countries this month.
What makes this placement distinct from Google or Meta is the user context. ChatGPT ads surface when a user is in "research or decision mode" during a conversation, meaning your ad reaches someone who has already expressed purchase intent by asking a shopping question rather than someone who triggered a keyword or happened past a social post.
"What OpenAI is doing is similar to what Google, Meta, and Amazon already offer retailers. The difference is that ChatGPT is serving ads based on conversational intent rather than signals from search behavior, social engagement, or browsing in a marketplace environment." -- Debra Aho Williamson, Sonata Insights
OpenAI also added dynamic URL parameter support this cycle. Campaign, ad group, and ad IDs now auto-insert into destination URLs, eliminating the manual UTM setup that created attribution gaps for early adopters and making performance tracking significantly cleaner from day one.
Three major integrations arrived with this update. Triple Whale users can now install a connector to bring ChatGPT Ads data into their attribution dashboard alongside Meta, Google, and TikTok. Sonar Optimize improves conversion signal quality sent back to OpenAI's bidding algorithm, helping the model learn and improve over time. Hightouch supports direct conversion event tracking into ChatGPT Ads for brands using it as their data activation layer. Pixel diagnostics also received an upgrade, surfacing more detail when a conversion event fires incorrectly along with specific fix recommendations directly in Ads Manager.
ChatGPT Ads is not a replacement for Google or Meta. It is a complementary channel that intercepts buyers during the research phase before they have decided on a specific product or brand. Google Shopping reaches buyers with strong transactional intent. Meta reaches buyers through behavioral targeting and creative resonance. ChatGPT reaches buyers mid-conversation, when they are still formulating what they want.
For 7 and 8-figure ecommerce brands with discovery-oriented catalogs, that moment is valuable. Starting CPMs of $25 and CPC bids of $3 to $5 make meaningful testing affordable relative to the potential upside of building first-mover efficiency before competition saturates the channel. Brands that moved early on Google Shopping in 2012 or TikTok Ads in 2019 built cost advantages that took competitors years to close. ChatGPT Ads in late August 2026 has the same early-mover profile.
